Completing my Master’s Program as a Working Professional: Why I’m Taking the Leap

Making a major lifestyle change is a deeply personal journey, often shaped by our unique experiences. The decision to drastically shake things up, to do something more, better, or simply different for ourselves can be both daunting and exciting – especially if it’s an abrupt change from an otherwise predictable and comfortable routine. For me, the decision to enroll in a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology program while working full-time wasn’t made lightly. This will be a commitment that will test my time management skills, resilience, and dedication—but one that I’m confident will be worth every effort.

Honouring My Passion to Help Others
My career path has always been rooted in service to others. With a background in psychology, social service work, teaching trauma-informed yoga, and my current vocation as a coach and consultant; I’ve always prioritized supporting individuals through some of life’s toughest and most transformational challenges. However, I’ve continued to feel called toward deepening my expertise and expanding my ability to make a meaningful impact. Becoming a licensed therapist is not just a professional goal but a personal calling—a way to bring together my education, skills, and life experiences to help others heal, develop, and thrive.

Why Now?
The timing seems a bit daunting between balancing work, personal life, and now a demanding academic schedule. But I’ve learned that growth often requires us to step outside of our comfort zones. My current role as a coach repeatedly demonstrates the power of integrating psychological principles into professional development. It has also reinforced the importance of investing in my personal growth in order to better serve others. By pursuing this particular program now, I’m equipping myself with the necessary tools and credentials to take both my career and my life to the next level.

The Challenges and Rewards
I won’t downplay it: this journey will be challenging! Ridiculously early mornings, fully-packed days, some late nights, and trade-offs will become part of my routine. But I’ve discovered that I’m capable of doing hard things once I have a clear sense of purpose. Each lecture, assignment, and practicum placement is an opportunity to develop my capabilities, resilience, and confidence so that I can eventually support others with achieving theirs.

A Message for Fellow Lifelong Learners
If you’re contemplating making a bold change in your lifestyle, just know that it’s always scarier in our heads than in reality. We often over-emphasize the difficulty of something, while downplaying the resources, support, and compassion that exists outside of our comfort zones. I’m a fully-grown adult with a wonderful partner, a great job, a fulfilling lifestyle, and am about to embark on a life changing journey to further develop myself. This is my leap of faith—one grounded in passion, purpose, and the unwavering belief that I can make a difference.

Change is intimidating because it is uncertain. We simply don’t know what we don’t know. But with careful planning, a strong support network, and a deep connection to your “why,” it’s entirely possible. It’s never too late. You’re never too old, too comfortable, too out of practice, too this or too that. If it’s important, you can do it – even if that means just 1% of it right now. The most worthwhile endeavours come with the greatest challenges—and the most profound rewards.
